I have been a subscriber to The Gifting Club since the end of July and came in part way through the Major League Baseball season.  I will give my views and experiences on the season in a moment but first I recommend you read the excellent report posted by Alistair back in March when he trialled the Basketball service.  This will give you a good insight into how the Gifting Club works.  The MLB works on a series of four games, called a selection, and you need to set your own profit target per selection.  I used £25.  If game 1 wins fine, but if not your losses and profit target are rolled into game 2 and so on.  If game 4 loses then a loss is taken.  When I joined, the win/loss record was 117/2 and the two losses totalled around 30 points.  A most impressive net profit at this stage of 87 points, or £2175 at the staking level I was using. Very soon the record had gone to 136/2 but I was uncomfortable with the stakes when a fourth game was reached as 30+ points were usually at stake.  These fourth games were not common but there were enough to make me uneasy.  From 136/2 to last weekend, when The Gifting Club finished their season the record went to 164/6.

I was going to write this report earlier in the week but I am glad I held back as a newsletter has come out and The Gifting Club admit the problems with the second half of the season and to quote them ‘ the sports books finally caught on to our system and started pricing our game 4′s where it was too risky to take the money line.  This forced us to take the run line to lower the risk and ultimately cost us three huge losses.  The games did win on the money line however, which means the system did work.’  For those of you not familiar with the American terms the money line is the straightforward win or lose and the run line is the handicap, usually 1.5.  There were actually four losses in the latter part of the season but one of them was being bet on using the odds against team, not the favourite, and the loss was much lower.  They say they are going to make adjustments for next season but they do not say what.

So where does that leave The Gifting Club as a service.  If you had been a subscriber for the whole of the MLB season then you would have shown a small profit,  but you would have been hugely disappointed with the way the profits of around 105 points at it’s peak went down very quickly when the losses occurred.  It will be interesting to see how they approach the next MLB season and how they propose to reduce the risk.  For now there are plenty more services to take us through the winter and I will post a report in the next few weeks on the NFL and College Football systems.  These are different to the MLB as the loss recovery system is not used.

The service has potential and their customer service is fine but I would say to anyone thinking of subscribing proceed with caution and if you go to their website you can freely subscribe to their ‘still skeptical’ service which is self-explanatory when you read it.

Little Acorns

I did not quite run the trial for the full month but I have been able to form an opinion as to what is required to make this system work efficiently.  Little Acorns is a low risk laying system on Betfair that selects odds-on favourites considered likely to lose.  To be fully effective and to maximise your profits you really need to run this system every raceday so it is one for the serious punter.  A selection process needs to be carried out each morning, ideally before 10.00am, and you end up with definite horses to lay and those to go onto a watchlist.  Those on the watchlist are looked at again in the 15 minutes prior to the race and you are looking for certain criteria to be met to see if you are going to lay the favourite.  I cannot in this report say what all the relevant criteria are as that would not be fair to Little Acorns but the whole procedure is not at all time consuming.

The system can be purchased for a one-off payment of £97 and the instruction book is very easy to follow.  Little Acorns publish their results once a month on their website and there is a steady growth in profits.  Two staking plans are in the instructions, one more aggressive than the other, and over the last three months the longest losing sequence has been four and this is comfortably accounted for.  It is inevitable at some stage a longer losing sequence will occur and some subscribers may then be uncomfortable with the increasing stakes.  If past history is a guide this will happen infrequently and one option would be to write off the losses after five losing bets and reverting back to the one point stake, rather than continue with the staking plan if that was getting out of your comfort zone.

I have run a number of queries past Little Acorns during this trial and they have been most helpful.  A concern of mine was to ensure I was using exactly the same criteria as them so my results matched theirs.  This has led to a couple of ideas, one of which is being seriously looked at.  That is for Little Acorns to offer a subscription service for a modest monthly fee where they would do the morning selections of definite qualifiers and a watchlist, and then email them to subscribers.  The onus would of course then be on the subscriber to monitor the races in the fifteen minutes prior to the off.  The other idea to consider is using a bot to do the selection process for you.  I have not explored the practical side of doing this but those of you using a bot, such as Grey Horse Bot, may have already considered this.  Graham would appreciate some feedback on this from anyone using an automated selection process.

I will continue to use this system as part of my betting portfolio as I like the low risk element.  I think this is so important with a laying system.  I am sure we have all had our fingers burned at some stage by laying horses at around 7 and 8 and seen profits wiped out over two or three races.  So onto the approved list for Little Acorns and I am confident the people behind it will strive to improve and fine tune it with the feedback they are getting.

UPDATE

I thought it would be time to do an update of the Little Acorns laying system.

We reviewed this back in August 08 and found it to be simple to operate and a nice little earner.

The results since then have been very good:

2008

Sept  +14.52

Oct  +14.29

Nov + 15.11

Dec +9.70

2009

Jan + 15.90

Feb + 14.18

Mar + 22.92

April + 21.10

May + 23.20

June +13.33

Thats £16,425 at £100 per point since September for very little effort. I definitely recommend this system as a great addition to your betting arsenal.

Little Acorns

A strange day today with odds-on favourites coming nowhere all afternoon and would you believe it, I did not land one.  Nine onto the watchlist, all passed The Racing Post test and race 1 qualified prior to the off.  Unfortunately none of the others did.  I read a trading/betting forum on a regular basis and a lot of Little Acorns fans contribute regularly to it.  One managed to find six winning bets out of six today, I would love to know his secret.

Yarmouth 2.30.  Layed Leftontheshelf at 1.99.  Loss £9.90.  Increase stake to £20.

Profit to date £81.64

Little Acorns

Plenty of action Saturday 26 July and a strange one in the 6.35 at Salisbury.  Being Saturday I am not around for the early check so my list was prepared around 11.45am.  One qualifying race and eleven onto the watchlist.  Three failed The Racing Post test and the first race to look at was not until 4.15.  Before I list the results I will give a brief summary of the 6.35 at Salisbury.  The race qualified prior to the off and I entered my stake but as money moves so fast in this period I could not get an immediate match as the price had drifted in a matter of seconds.  A few minutes passed and it looked as if my price was not going to be touched again so I cancelled my bet.  Very soon the race qualified again and I entered my bet and exactly the same thing happened again but this time the price drifted quickly and substantially to leave the horse no longer odds-on.  I did not take the bet at over 2.00.  The horse, Talk of Saafend, went on to win his race so those of you who were matched at under 2.00 would have lost their bet.  My records will not show this race as I was unmatched.

York 4.15.  Layed Captain Ellis at 1.70.  Profit £9.50 after commission.

Lingfield 5.50.  Layed Amicable Terms at 1.73.  Loss £7.30.

Lingfield 6.50.  Layed You’ve Been Mowed at 1.79.  Profit £19.00 after commission.

Salisbury 7.05.  Layed Elnawin at 1.56.  Loss £5.60.  First stake tomorrow £20.

Profit to date £63.04

Little Acorns

Straightforward day and a profit.  No qualifying races at 10.00am and twelve onto the watchlist.  One failed The Racing Post test leaving eleven to monitor prior to the off.  This may seem a lot of races to revisit but the procedure is very quick and simple and you can often tell immediately if you have a potential lay or not.  I have seen the question raised on another forum how easy is Little Acorns to operate if you are at work. My opinion is you really do need to have regular access to your computer during racetimes and if this fit’s in with your work schedule then fine.  If you are combining Little Acorns with any other systems then as long as you are organised by 1.30pm then barring unforeseen interruptions everything should run smoothly.  If you are a bit hit and miss with your betting and do not follow correct procedures then I am afraid you are going to lose money in the long term.  Anyhow I have gone off at a tangent so back to today.

Only one race qualified and that was a winner.

4.10 at Wolverhampton.  Layed Mister Green at 1.94.  Profit £19 after commission.  Back to £10 stake.

Profit to date £47.44.

Report for Wednesday 23 July and for the second day running I was unable to check Betfair at 10.00am.  When I was able to check, around 10.45am, there were no qualifying races.  Eight went onto the watchlist and all passed The Racing Post test.  The 3.30 at Lingfield was interesting as in the period prior to the off the race qualified so I laid Zebrano at 1.92 and almost immediately his price shortened and the prices of the other horses drifted quite noticeably and he went off a very strong favourite.  If you had missed the short time frame when the race qualified you would not have layed it so it is so important to watch the prices carefully leading up to the off and I think experience will show you when you expect a race to possibly qualify.  The horse duly obliged and came in 3rd.

Lingfield 3.30.  Layed Zebrano at 1.92.  Bet won – profit after commission £28.50  Back to £10 lay next race.

Leicester 6.45. Layed Burning Flute at 2.00.  Bet lost £10.  Lay next race £20.
Profit to date £28.44.
