BestLays – Final Report

Today brings my 4 weeks evaluation of the modified system to an end. After some considerable ups & downs along the way, we have ended the month 2.6pts in profit. This may not seem much of a return for a month of betting but we have come through some very poor conditions, cancelled meetings, etc and many systems are showing losses. So I don’t intend to Fail this service, though with such a result it hardly justifies a Recommended either.

The official results show just about a break even situation for this period, the difference being accounted for by my bot not being the same as the official one. I feel a bit like Eric Morecambe with Andre Previn here, because I was following the rules but not necessarily getting the same odds. The recommendation, if using a bot, is to take the lay price at 20 seconds before the start but since this is a time when prices can be changing rapidly, occasionally a horse is missed. This gives me some misgivings in the case of those who are operating manually, it’s quite possible for them to be laying or missing horses which may or may not be a valid selection at the official time.

In other respects, this is a well operated service: the emails arrive well in time, there is a results page on the website and also instructions for setting up the GHB, if you happen to have it. Like all laying systems, it will always have its bad days. For this month at least it managed to survive them without loss. My recommendation has to be a Neutral in light of this.

Better result from the last three days: 19 selections and a profit of 5.50pts from them, reducing the loss overall to 6.6pts.

Just 11 selections made it in the last three days and they resulted in a loss of 9.53pts, pushing the overall position since the odds adjustment out to minus 12.1pts.

With the cancelled meetings due to frost, we have had just 11 selections qualifying in the last three betting days, two of which were winners. Result is that we knocked 4.15pts off the deficit and now stand only 2.6pts below break even.

Better news from this service in the first two days since the last report and they got us just to break even since the adjustment of the odds limits, but a bit of a slump yesterday put us 7.4pts into the red.

It’s good to report that the last three days have been positive and all three helped to reduce the previous deficit. We now stand at just 3.2 pts behind and if this trend continues, the broad uplands of profit beckon. Perhaps that’s a little fanciful, but after a period in the doldrums, I feel entitled to a little hyperbole.

For the record, the strike rate is 61.54%, not a great figure for a laying system at the moment, even with the average odds of 3.95, but if the current trend continues this should improve. The present balmy weather is obviously a factor in this, so we must hope that it continues.

We are still waiting for the improvement we are looking for to start rolling back our losses. We have just about held our own in the last three days, losing just one point in that time, making our overall position -18.3pts.

The New Year has not started well for the system: from 29 qualifying selections, we have had 13 winners and the result has been a loss of just over 17pts in the three days. These poor figures must reflect bad racing conditions in some way and we have to hope and expect things to turn around. In October and November the system performed very nicely, so it has done well in the past. Patience is called for here, no system is perfect but we need to see an improvement before the bank is too severely dented.

The Bet Engine (TBE)

I have been using The Bet Engine (TBE) for twelve months now, so an update on my original report is appropriate. However, what can I say? It would be a lot easier if I could report various snags, or dropped bets, or mis-calculations of odds placed, but as it stands, I’m a bit stuck, because it performs perfectly in everything it does. If you like a bit of a challenge from your programs to keep you on your toes, you will be disappointed in TBE, because it never steps out of line, never gives you a chance to show your skill in overcoming insurmountable obstacles, it just does exactly what you ask it to do: it’s so boring and predictable.

I could go on at length about its ability to handle up to 10 systems on horses or dogs, with dozens of filters and settings, but you can go to the website to see all that for yourselves. What I can say is that, with its aid, I have handled a number of system trials on the blog, often several at the same time as well as my own betting activities, sometimes running as many as 8 systems at once, all with different settings and some live, some on test setting and all with different staking plans. TBE has handled them all without error.

Whenever Betfair has had one of its little mishaps and has shifted the goalposts a little more for us, Alistair, the author, has supplied an answer within hours. There has also been a steady stream of enhancements to the filters, as suggested or requested by the users. Despite all this constant attendance, the cost for this Rolls-Royce of bots is moderate and set so that you only pay for the level you need for your betting.

Those of you with day jobs who would like to use a particular system or systems have the perfect answer here. Since you can set both a target and a stop loss (even trailing), you need never fear coming home to a disaster.

You may have gained the impression that I am rather impressed by TBE? You’d be right!

The last day of the year provided us with a welcome return to a profit , one of those days I mentioned earlier in which we only had one winner from the list of qualifiers. In today’s case, it was 10 losers and one winner at 3.15, so a yield of 7.85pts, which helped to assuage the shock of the last three days, which have cost us over 14pts and leave the month on a rather disappointing deficit of 28pts.

However, as I mentioned a couple of days ago, Mich, the author of the system, has changed the odds filter and this will certainly cut down the loss when a winner crops up. In view of this fundamental change, I propose to run the test for a further period to give this new format a decent chance.
