Winning Racing Tips

I am taking over the trial from Terry. I will be starting the trail from scratch as the previous results are unavailable.

I am using a £1000 starting bank, and the advised 40 points. So each point will be worth £25.

In addition I will also look at the bonus bets that are included in the email, but I will run these from a separate £1000 bank.

I feel my only concern about this service is getting the odds as advised. This may be possible if you act quickly once the email is received, but will probably be less by the time most punters get to placing bets. I will, therefore, record bets using the prices I get at the time but please recognise that this means your experience and that of the Author may be slightly different to mine.

Not sure if I mentioned this at the start of the trial but the reason for the gaps between posting results is that tips are received via an email on a Friday evening for the weekend’s fixtures. When there are weekday games of interest an advice is sent out on the Monday.

This week I decided to try and use the e-book’s rules on the selections sent for myself. This was mainly done to see if I understood enough to come up with the same bets as the authors. I came up with different stake values for 2 of the bets and a No Bet for the MLS game.

I emailed the authors to ask why that would be seeing as I followed the FACT based rules to the letter and was very thorough in my assessment of the opinion based rule.

I received a very polite and thorough reply stating that it appeared that I was using the book correctly but that for the email service the authors use the rules as a basis but also apply more weight to the own research and opinion.

They explained that they wrote the book to be as easy to understand as possible for the lay-person and whilst I had stated all the fact based figures correctly, they added a layer of opinion and common sense (my wording, not theirs) on top.

I’m happy with that explanation. I have in the past ended trials of services early when it became apparent that a service was telling you one thing in their book and an entirely different thing in their emails, but I’m happy that this is not the case here.

Just for interest purposes, my reading of the rules for the 3 games selected would have been 100pt Overs on Haka (+£90), No Bet on Real Salt Lake and 100pt Under on Vaasa (-£100). So a loss of £10.

With each bet you are given the name of the bookmaker(s) offering the best odds. As mentioned in a previous post, I always check these when I receive a tip to make sure the prices quoted are available. This week one of the bookmakers advised was Betfair. I was very pleased to see that the odds advised had been reduced by 5% to allow for the commission payable. As always, I did check the price was available and checked the maths to make sure the correct reduction had been made. It all checked out perfectly, so that is a good sign. There are a few concerns I have about this service that I will cover in the final write up (nothing too damning) but I really did appreciate the transparency of the Betfair odds.

Champion Lays

There was one selection over the weekend, but I was unable to place the bet due to unavoidable circumstances. This was probably just as well because it would have been a losing lay. Also, it is now time to wrap up the trial, so below is the final review.

FINAL REVIEW

World Cup aside, with the trial period falling outside the football season, I don’t think the timing was ideal. There were plenty of occasions when market liquidity was very poor and odds were chased out to levels where I was not prepared to bet.

I read that something like 4000 people signed up for the trial, but I don’t know what proportion were placing bets, rather than paper trading. However, from experience I believe that someone who doesn’t paper trade (or place tiny bets to test a system/ service) is generally also someone who lacks a clear understanding of how markets work and the concept of “value” and will chase prices.

During the season there is plenty of liquidity in the top European leagues. Consequently, even 4000 layers, betting reasonable amounts, would not be able to push prices out by very much. I feel a much better sense of how this service could perform if the trial had been delayed until after the season was under way.

On to the service itself. Emails giving selections were sent out in a very timely manner and were very detailed. I am not a football expert, but the match analysis looked to me to be high quality and well worth reading. Also, Andrew, the proprietor, was well aware of the dangers of prices being chased out and advised patience. I suspect that while many subscribers may have taken heed, there were some for whom the warning fell on deaf ears.

Regarding the results: I recorded a loss of £22.50 for the trial period, or just over two points. While this is hardly a disaster, it does not represent a profit.

I would like to see how this service fares during the season, when there is liquidity in the markets. Also, Andrew has stated that there will be only 200 subscribers. On that basis, prices are much more likely to remain stable and I would be interested to see how the service fares after the season is under way. In the meantime, while the monthly subscription fees are not excessive for this kind of service (maximum £37 per month), I recommend it should appear in the Neutral category.
