Lay-Zy Dogs

This system requires you to lay greyhounds at certain tracks and traps. In the first week of testing I must say the liquidity in the greyhound markets are very low and mostly you struggle to get a simple £2 lay bet matched. Out of around 30 races only once have the odds been below 9.0 and then got matched for a £2 lay. If this trend continues into the second week I think that it will be going in the failed systems category due to the fact of the low liquidity and not being able to get the required lay odds of below 9.0 on most selections.

I have tried this service for three months, as the vendor requested. He recommends that you lay to a liability of £25 up to a maximum of 7/1 odds and I have done this throughout this period, choosing 2 or 3 or occasionally 4 bets per day from the selections sent. I have maintained the claimed strike rate of around 85% and have made a profit sufficient to pay three month’s subscriptions plus a small balance. On this basis, I have to say that this is Approved – but with some qualification.

You see, you are sent up to 12 selections each day, from which you choose, randomly, about a third of them as bets. My results from this process are as above but I cannot say that yours will be the same. You may do better, you may do worse, depending on your choices. Another point is that you have to attend very closely to the betting process because the money only comes in very rapidly in the last minute before the actual start, which is not by any means the scheduled start time. Unless you are quick on the draw, you can miss the odds.

As an example, I ran these bets on Betsender since 1st November, with a target bet time 10 seconds before the scheduled start. Out of 98 bets credited to the service in that period, I actually got only 51 of them matched at the 10 second point. This is because the odds follow the money and this hasn’t fully come in by 10 secs before the official start. As a matter of interest, I had set Betsender to bet at level stakes and out of those 51 bets, I achieved 22 pts of profit, so at a suitable point value, this would have created a profit as well. Since this was only for the two months since Nov 1st, it suggests that over the full three months, that points total might have been in the thirties.

Actually, daft as the selection process seems, when you consider that on any average day there are upwards of 500 dogs racing (some days up to 1000, even) and you are selecting only 3 or 4 of them to lose, it’s almost surprising that you ever pick a winner. Of course, each race has only 6 runners and one of them will be a winner, so the odds are not quite as good as they look. It’s an odd, you might say ideosyncratic service but whichever way you bet it, level stakes or the recommended staking, it does seem to work, so yes, it’s Approved. Final figures are:

Starting Bank £500.00
Final Bank £606.04
Strike Rate Overall 84.71%
Av. Odds 5.77
Percentage of bets chosen 28.10%

While greyhound racing is not so affected by bad weather as the horse racing tracks, they do, nevertheless, suffer from occasional abandonments and this has affected the number of bets made this week. Nine or ten selections would be advised and I would choose three from them, then find that two of them had disappeared. On two other occasions there were only 6 & 7 advised so I took only one, or at most, two from them. Consequently, I only chose 12 bets this week.

As it happens, this has turned out well for the service, with a bit of a recovery, almost to former levels, but it does demonstrate how random these choices are. However, we don’t look gift horses in the mouth and the results are:

Start Bank £500.00
Current £602.48
Strike Rate 85.19 %
Av Odds 6.40.

This current spell of bad weather has taken its toll on some of the greyhound meetings as well as the horses, a number having been abandoned this week. Consequently, only 9 bets survived the cull and there was just one winner chosen among them. This brought a bit of advance in the week’s results, though nothing sensational. We are still looking for that week when I pick no winners. So, a modest profit this week:

Start Bank £500.00
Current £586.39
Strike Rate 84.67%
Av. Odds 5.98.

64 selections received this week, from which I chose 17 at random, as usual. Unhappily, I wasn’t even as good – or bad – at picking losers as usual, I picked 4 winners among them. This naturally had a bad effect on the results and gave us a loss.

Start Bank £500.00
Current £568.34
Strike Rate 84.40
Av. Odds 6.00

Once again, not much movement to report: 64 selections advised from which I chose 17, thus maintaining almost the one-third random choice recommended by the author. Of these I once again picked three winners, which meant three full liability losses to offset against the profit. With this method you tread a fine line between profit & loss and someone else’s choices might make a big difference, either way.

It does concern me that the SP can be so far from what you are offered as lay price on Betfair, sometimes as much as double at the time you can place your bet. It’s a big problem for layers that so much of the money surges in after the scheduled start-time and before the actual Off, often leading to big gaps between available lay prices and the ultimate SP.

Running Bank £587.91
Strike Rate 84.25%

This method is still marking time, the bank has hardly moved this week, despite me only finding two winners to upset things from the 15 selections I chose from the 53 listed. I must say that I am rather concerned at the odds one is sometimes offered with these bets, odds which I would not be inclined to take, some of them. However, I have registered them all for the review. Results for this week then:

Starting Bank £500.00
Current £597.06
Strike Rate 85.32%
Average Odds 5.77.

Once again, we had 54 bets to chooses from, I chose 16, again just under 30%. Unfortunately, once again I managed to pick three winners this week – and looking back, that seems to have been my average and the result is that despite the rest of my bets losing and clawing back most of the loss, I finished the week a little lower. The service is still in profit but one wonders if level staking might not achieve better results. Of course, more inspired picking by me would do that too and anyone considering this service should remember that these results are purely what I get from my picks and with a bit better luck, or whatever governs these things, the results might be much better. However, this week they are:

Starting Bank £500.00
Current Bank £591.23p
Strike Rate 85.11%
Av. Odds 5.62.

Greyhound Lays

An up & down sort of week which illustrates the way a laying system progresses – or doesn’t – and how the results are affected by a particular staking plan. At the advised 5% liability of a £500 bank, a winner costs you £25 and I had three of them this week. Fortunately, the other 13 bets just about managed to claw that back but what I need is to be a bit luckier with my choice of bets. There were 54 advised selections to choose from, so my 16 bets were around 30% of them, just about what the system advises. My own view, if betting these dogs for real, would be to choose about 20% since less choices obviously mean less chance of hitting the winners which are inevitably included in the daily list. I’ll run a level stakes spreadsheet this month as well as the advised staking, to see what the actual points score is.

Start Bank £500.00
Current Bank £602.48p
Strike Rate 84.62%
Av. Odds 5.42

Almost the end of the first month of my three month assessment and this service is beginning to blossom. Despite, or because of, the slightly crazy method of defining the selections you are willing to lay, my results are very satisfactory and a decent profit has been banked, even with the usual setbacks one expects of a laying service. If this trend continues, I foresee a resounding Approval rating. However, laying is not always a bed of roses and I shall wait for the remaining period to see if I am still happy then. Results to date:

Start Bank £500.00
Current £604.49p
Strike Rate 86.49%
