Trainer Trends

This is a tipping service by Mark Foley and is based on his study of trainers and their habits.

I’ve been following the selections for a month now since the start of the Flat season and have to say, so far at least, I’m impressed.

You get a daily e-mail, or you can login to the members area for the info, and it makes for an interesting read.

Mark will briefly describe which trainers he’s looking at that day and which horses are of interest. He then highlights his specific selections and then explains why he’s selected them.

You can of course just get the selections and place your bets, but for those that have an interest in horse racing other than just to make money, this adds an extra dimension that enhances the experience.

Some days there can be quite a few bets as you seem to back all the horses by a particular trainer, and so you can be backing ten, sometimes fifteen horses on any given day. Other days there may be only one or two. The vast majority of bets are simply 1 point to win but there have been two or three that were half a point each way.

The results so far, as I said, have been impressive with nearly 50 points profit to 1 point level stakes at SP, up to 11th May. Had you got early prices, a much nicer profit would have been achievable.

I’ll continue testing this for another two months but it’s looking very good so far.

Horse Betting Analyst

I’ve been receiving the tips for Horse Betting Analyst since January this year and so now is a good time to review my results.

Horse Betting Analyst is a horse tipping service that has been running since 2009 and has recorded a track record of £120,000+ profit to £100 stakes (which isn’t too shabby at £25 stakes either!)

Like any successful racing service, they concentrate on getting value in their selections and making a profit over the long term.

The tips are sent by e-mail each morning and selections are given with a number of points advised to stake on each with the current best odds available at Best Odds Guaranteed bookies. There are win and each way bets and fairly often you get some overnight ante post bets given out at very good odds.

An example e-mail is like this:

For Thursday 9th May 2013

2.15 Chester

DANADANA 6 PT WIN @ 9/2 Hills BOG

(BOG = Best Odds Guaranteed)

The communication with the owner is excellent although I’ve never felt much need to do so as it’s all pretty straightforward.

And so on to the results.

January:
22 bets with 4 winners
8.8 points profit

February:
22 bets with 4 winners
-64.37 points loss

March:
40 bets with 5 winners
2.8 points profit

April:
39 bets with 12 winners
214.88 points profit

May (to date):
14 bets with 6 winners
67.5 points profit

Total: 137 bets with 31 winners (23% strike rate)

229.61 points profit

£22,961 at £100 a bet
£5,740.25 at £25 a bet

Now anyone that joined at the beginning of this year could be forgiven for thinking this service wasn’t up to much, in the first few months anyway. It recorded a loss of 64 points in February and a small 2.8 point profit in March.

But I’m familiar with how this sort of betting operates. This winter was particularly hard on nearly all services that sought value in their betting, so I wasn’t at all surprised at the results. And sure enough, come the spring and the results sprang back with a vengeance. 214 points in April is incredible by any standards and certainly made up for the harsh winter period.

I consider any service that makes 50+ points a year to be a worthwhile service. This has made 229 points in four and a half months and during the toughest winter that I can remember for backing value horses.

I have no hesitation at all in giving this a big thumbs up and am looking forward to how it progresses over the summer months. I will be giving periodic updates throughout the summer.

Last year I reviewed Risk Free Trader – a fresh and quite innovative way to find potentially profitable Arbitrage trades between Betfair and the bookies. When first brought to the market, this was a purely manual system and required a degree of dexterity near to race time with a keyboard, calculator/spreadsheet and your web browser. With a narrow window of opportunity that exists whilst the prices are still available it can be a rather frenetic time to ensure you get your bets matched on both the exchange and have your bet accepted at the required odds by the bookmaker to ensure your profit.

Steve Davison has now joined forces with the creator of this method and with his programming team come up with an automated method to find these arbing opportunities with relative ease.

Named Zero Risk Trader – you log into the software select UK/Irish races, select your staking requirements and if necessary a required ROI for the trade and press the Scan button. All qualifying race selections will appear with the amount of money currently available on the exchange and the current Bookmaker(s) offering the required price to maximise your return. There is also an autoscan feature whereby the software will refresh the list every few minutes keeping you up to date with any further qualifying races/selections as the markets fluctuate throughout the day. Double clicking a selection in the results window shows the detail for the selection and what the outcome will be if the horse wins, places or loses the race. As the title suggests, provided you place your stakes in accordance with the detail on the screen and get all of your stake matched at the price shown, you will not lose/ at worst, breaking even.

The software works very well indeed and takes all of the drudgery out of going through the racecards manually checking for viable arbing opportunities. You are able to change the stake values on the selection detail panel and the arbing results will change accordingly to illustrate your profitable outcome.

However, and this is no different to the comments I made in my previous review. This is arbing, and you will need to keep a number of bookie accounts along with your Betfair account regularly topped up with cash. Furthermore, the returns on the trades are of course relative to the size of the stakes you place, and with most of the opportunities being at the higher end of the odds range during my time with the software so unless you are happy betting with reasonable sums of money / a large chunk of working capital, this may not be for you. For example : placing bets of say £10/20 for a net return of £1.50 really doesn’t seem worth the effort as far as I am concerned.

One other thing to be wary of is the availability of money on the given market. Because of the way this method works, sometimes you may think a great trade has presented itself only to find that sufficient  money on one side of the market is not there. Reducing your stake to match the pool of money that is there, can make you realise quite quickly that the trade is not worthwhile after all.

Here are a few examples of trades that I found using the software. You will note the Potential Betfair Liability  column which shows how much money you would need in your exchange account to enable the trade.

A note of caution however, more than ever the bookmakers seem to be wiser and able to spot people using their account facilities for arbing. So, you will still need to operate with a degree of caution when flinging money about between bookmakers, (they will have the last laugh).

The software makes the task of arb selection much simpler and for those interested in getting involved at this level in playing the markets it is a valuable tool and very reasonably priced too. If you are serious about using this you should be able to make the purchase price of this back quite quickly. There are two pricing options (note: you cannot, nor realistically would you want to(!),  purchase the software WITHOUT the trading strategy manual):

1)      Trading Strategy Manual + Software Access for 3 months at £199.95

6 month software renewal £99.97 / 12 month renewal £139.97

2)      Trading Strategy Manual only £149.95 (if you purchase this first or can offer proof of your purchase of this manual when it first came out last year- you can only purchase the 6/12 month software renewal option shown above ie. no 3 month option is available)

On the merits of the software alone, which does a great job of simplifying the tedious process of finding the trades – Approved. But with a note of caution : ensure you keep the stakes within reasonable limits and follow the suggestions for cashing out money from the bookies in the strategy manual, this will hopefully avoid the claxon sounding and an account closure email from the bookmaker winging its way to your inbox.

Russell Gibbs

February was a losing month on the backing side with a loss of 13.5 points but this was mitigated by a profit of £820 to £100 lay liabilities on the laying side helped with some odds on selections.

March was better for the backing side with a profit of 16.2 points and a profit of £235 on the lay side.

NOTE TO TRADERS: It is worth noting that a large percentage of Win and Each way bets shorten in price leaving many opportunities to ARB. This will appeal to the traders among you.

Well another month has rolled up and I figure it is time I give my verdict on the tipping service offered by the BetAlchemist.

From the last posting on 8th March, there have been 41 selections resulting in a profit of 4.6 pts.
So the bank stands in profit to the tune of  a mere 2.8 pts! Not quite what I was expecting to be truthful.

(To be clear – my review for  this service EXCLUDED coverage of the ANTEPOST bets of which there were a few in number over the course of the review so what profit could have been attributed to those, I could not say.)

To be fair to this service, we do seem to have had a poor run during this review – with average monthly results, from the two previous years, showing profits  generally in the ‘tens’ of points .But of course, that’s just the way these reviews go sometimes. Despite this, I will reiterate the very impressive results this service achieved over the Cheltenham festival period which amounted to 71.5 points over the 4 day period!

Your first month is charged at a discounted rate of £15 (+VAT) – subsequent months subscriptions at £30 (+VAT) . For this you get access to the website and a regular email update from Nicky to advise of the latest selections posted on the BetAlchemist website. The sign-up deal also includes a 60 day money-back guarantee / your payment is submitted via Clickbank. They also offer a discounted quarterly subscription rate of £79 (+VAT) which obviously represents even better value.
Once signed up, simply log in , take the selections to your BOG bookmaker and place your bets.

Overall, if you are bettor who is prepared to take a more relaxed stance in your day to day betting activities then perhaps BetAlchemist is the product for you.

Given the meagre return over the course of the last three months, I would normally have offered a Neutral rating but assuming the historical results I have seen are legit, and I have no reason to doubt that they are otherwise, I feel confident this  is merely a seasonal ‘blip’ in proceedings. On balance though, I am going to suggest that this service is given an APPROVED rating on the merits of its’ results achieved during the Cheltenham festival, which I am sure you will agree, are astonishing!

WRS  suffered a losing 30 day period: down 3.06 pts.

After 180 days of monitoring this service, the bank stands at 158.2 pts using level stakes.   The starting bank at day 1 was 160 points.

The service is has lost 1.8 pts overall to level stakes.

The number of winning 30 day periods is  2 out of 6.

The number of losing 30 day periods is  4 out of 6.

The Two year old component of WRS has been modified and begins again this month, so I have decided to continue the review.

Nicky (aka the BetAlchemist) has been busy making his selections in the lead up to Cheltenham week. With the festival over and done with for another year, you will be pleased to hear that his selections have done very well indeed! Of the 39 selections – 14 were winning bets and (assuming all bets were placed as ANTEPOST bets and at the prices advised in the run upto the festival), you would have seen a return of 71.5 points!

(If you need that qualifying : to £20 stakes, that’s over £1,400 quid (tax-free) over 4 days – impressive!)

Aside from Cheltenham, the other tips/selections advised since the start of the review are not doing quite so well with the current balance standing as it does at -3.0 pts, to advised prices.
However, perhaps this a seasonal blip given the pi** poor weather conditions we have been experiencing of late.

This weekend there is top class action at Fairyhouse with the Grade 1 Powers Gold Cup and the Irish Grand National and the Doncaster Lincoln too.  I suspect the Betalchemist will once again be working his magic this forthcoming Easter weekend so if you want to see what potentially profitable ‘gems’ he has to impart – you know what to do….!

Just a quick post to let you know that Lester has opened to doors, briefly, on Win Each Way. I do know that a lot of people missed out on this because it sold out so quickly so if you did miss this then now’s the time to get it. I very much doubt this will be open for very long.
